Víctor Jara and the New Chilean Song Movement
When the socialist politician Salvador Allende dramatically won Chile’s presidential election in 1970, a powerful cultural movement accompanied him to power. Folk singers emerged at the forefront, proving that music could help forge the birth of a new society.  A short cultural history, “Venceremos“ charts the development of the movement from the years before Allende’s victorious campaign to the brutal U.S.-backed military coup on September 11, 1973, that overthrew his presidency and imposed the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet.

Subversive Historian

2016 Calendar of Revolt!

The “Subversive Historian” morphs from its origin as a daily radio segment as heard for years on KPFK-Pacifica Radio in Los Angeles into 12-months of radical history! Co-created by Gabriel San Román and Carla Zarate, the ‘Calendar of Revolt’ combines the rebellious spirit of slingshot pocket organizers with an artistic aesthetic that a calendar brings while providing historical quotes of inspiration. It focuses on the emancipation battles of workers, radicals, women, people of color, and the LGBT community throughout the history of the United States and elsewhere.
